Jes,
Did the doctor discuss Ativan? I understand the not wanting to put your child on drugs. I do believe many children are unecessarily placed on medication. On the flip side, there are many that truly would lead happier and more productive lives if their parents would heed the advice of physicians and teachers. My neice is one of those children. She suffered through the first 8 years of her life and the first three years of school, because my sister felt the same way you do. She was constantly in trouble, and always bad grades. The teacher she had last year was adamant that she be tested for ADD or placed in another classroom. This is a very good teacher that does not dole out these words lightly. My neice was thouroughly examined, reviewed and interviewed. She was placed on a trial with Ativan. Oh my what a terriffic kid and now almost straight A's. I actually enjoy being around her. She was a terror before because she could not sit still, stop fidgeting and would not listen and carry through, EVER. Now she asks for her meds because she can focus better and stays out of trouble.

An alternative you may try before meds.... take him off every form of preservative, dye, nitrate, etc. in foods. Keep him eating only organic or natural foods. No refined anything including sugar), only whole foods. Another suggestion from a nutritionist I know, acidophilous (not yogurt, get it from the health food store), twice daily for a while. It will clean the impurities from his intestines. These are suggestions from a nutritionist about children diagnosed with ADD. Too much junk in our food these days, especially convenience food.
I hope I helped. Think about it long and hard and get another opinion.

I've thought about putting him on a diet too. We're not much of junk food eaters but I admit, he doesn't eat enough fruits and veggies. He'll only eat bananas and other fruits I buy in the sauce form - which I can imagine are processed to a point. As of vegetables - he's a picky eater with that. We eat a lot of fish so that helps a bit. I used to take Omega-3 myself. Isn't he too young for that? I'll have to find out.

I know there are some healthy foods that some children with ADD/ADHD CANNOT have: grapefruits, certain fish, nuts .. can't remember the rest.

Ativan?? Isn't that for seizure disorder? I've never heard it being used for ADD/ADHD.

I read up something interesting on the night regarding "Handwriting Therapy", where it's suppose to retrain the brain. It kind of reminds me of the Arrowsmith Program I've worked in before for children with learning disabilities].

I understand what you mean about the advantages of the meds. I would rather try out other alternatives first - and then use that as a last resort. I don't want him to suffer but I don't want to drug him at this point either.

Thanx for the inputs.
jes

You are correct about the Ativan.. I had the wrong name.. Adderall XR is the correct name. I am sorry it was a long day yesterday.
Check in your area for homeopathic doctors. They might be able to help with foods and vitamin therapy.
Good Luck.
Carla

I've heard of Adderall XR but I'm not sure what its all about. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'll have to wait to see what his pediatrician will say about ADD first. I'm going to see if I can put him on a strict diet. This is going to be the most challenging thing for me. I haaaaate cooking!! Hopefully a nutritionist will help me create a healthy, to-make] menu for him.

Any recipe advice? << I'm no chef. The quicker, the better!

I am sorry to hear that your son is under pressure to restart Ritalin at a time in his life when he has the added pressure of GCSEs and choosing a career, as well as all the stresses which adolescence brings with it.
Some children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) need only a brief (few months) period of medication, others stay on it for several years. However most do not need it after their mid teens and it would be unusual for paediatricians or psychologists to recommend a boy of your son's age to restart Ritalin.
At any age medication alone should not be the first line of attack. Psychological and behavioural therapy at home and at school can have a great impact on your son's learning, not to mention his self esteem and confidence all of which are often very poor in someone with ADHD.
You mention that your son also has dyslexia. It is very common for ADHD to occur in combination with other developmental problems such as dyslexia, language impairment, dyspraxia (problems with managing movement activities) or dyscalculia (problems with number organisation and work). He should be receiving support within school for his dyslexia.
The first thing to do, if this is not already underway, is to ask your son's school educational psychologist to review his needs and to ensure he is receiving enough extra learning, behavioural and psychological support for both his ADHD and his dyslexia. His GP or school doctor can help you to arrange this or can refer him to a local clinical child psychologist.
People often ask whether diet can play a part. Gluten free diets or cutting out E numbers have not been shown to help in scientific trials. Giving fish oils, flower oils or fatty acid treatments have also not be proven to work, although there is the occasional child whom parents say responds.
Some people with ADHD are sensitive to certain foods and become irritable and restless if they eat them. Caffeine containing drinks (cola, tea, coffee) are often blamed but almost any food can be responsible. This is not an allergy but a direct reaction to the food. It may be worth trying a very restrictive diet (one type of meat, one vegetable, one fruit and distilled water) for a week or so.
If there is an improvement, you can build the diet up gradually, one food at a time. Testing to see if your son relapses into whatever symptoms his ADHD usually causes him. By doing this over several months a special diet can be created.
This plan sometimes works but it is essential that a qualified dietician or nutritionist supervises the diet (your son's GP can refer him) to make sure that it contains the proper nutrients your son needs, especially at this age when he is growing and developing rapidly. However with all the other pressures of work and exams this regime may well not be worth trying at this stage.

“Enthusiastic student” and “Pleasure to have in class” appeared on my son’s first mid-term report, replacing the “Very little effort” and “Missing assignments” comments that chronically plagued past mid-terms and report cards.

My son’s teachers gave glowing reports of a young man who handed class work and homework in on time, who paid attention and actively participated in class.

I am still amazed that this is the same person who, just one year prior, struggled to maintain a “C” average in school, was tested for learning disabilities and received an Attention Deficit Disorder diagnosis after a school career marked with distress and defeat.

Then I found hope. I found the powerful and effective ADHD remedies Attend, Extress, and Memorin a healthful, drug-free and cost-effective way to manage ADD and ADHD symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder.

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is a label given to children and adults with significant problems in four main areas of their lives; inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity and boredom. The term Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is used when hyperactivity is a symptom. In this web site, Attention Deficit Disorder is used to describe both ADD and ADHD.

Attention Deficit Disorder ranks among the most common neurological disorders among American children, affecting as many as 2 million. Currently about six million children are taking Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta or other medication to manage the symptoms ADHD often has. In every classroom in the United States, you can expect to find at least one child with Attention Deficit Disorder. ADD and ADHD boys outnumber girls by 3 to 1 in prevalence.

Attention Deficit Disorder can hinder concentration, learning and memory. ADD and ADHD also affects a person's ability to process and sort incoming information or stimulus. While Attention Deficit Disorder is not classified a specific learning disability, ADD and ADHD often makes it difficult for a child to do well in school and in social situations.

All too often, the knee-jerk reaction to Hyperactivity Attention Deficit Disorder symptoms is Ritalin or other Attention Deficit Disorder medications. Yet, many parents are alarmed by the widespread use of ADHD medications and the negative side effects and want ADHD remedies that are safe and effective.

Ritalin and other ADD and ADHD medications do improve short-term behavior and school performance in many children with ADD and ADHD symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder and Ritalin is a convenient way to handle hard-to-handle kids. But, Ritalin and other ADD and ADHD medications also have many potentially harmful side effects.

Parents are often given only two choices when faced with an Attention Deficit Disorder diagnosis; use ADHD medications or do nothing. Doing nothing is not an option. This site provides information and options beyond those limited choices to alleviate and possible eliminate ADD and ADHD symptoms.
